Herbert was the 9th of George and Elizabeth Aveling's eleven children, five of whom had died before Herbert's birth. He was baptised at at St Peter & St Paul Church on Christmas Day 1887 along with his siblings George, Arthur, Flora and Maggie. On 27th April 1907 he married Mary Grace Gunfield at St Luke's church and on 7th June 1907 their only child, Norah, was born.
William enlisted in the Royal West Kents on 9th January 1915, he was described as being 5ft 6½ins tall, weighing 123lbs with tattoos. He was posted to the Front on 30th August 1915 and reported missing less than a month later.
His sister, Flora, also lost her husband Alfred Ernest Hawker.
