Charles was the only son of William and Emily Hack. Emily had previously been married to William Moore with whom she had two sons, the eldest dying when he was 25 in 1907. Charles attended Wharton Road School and was a member of St John's choir. He was formally a caddie at Sundridge Park golf-links, and was only nineteen when he opened the Faversham golf course as a professional. He remained at Faversham for four years as both greenkeeper and professional. He left there in 1913 and went to Italy, where he was appointed professional at Varese golf-links. Leaving Verese he went to Switzerland and was there when war broke was declared.

Charles enlisted in the RAMC on 3rd November 1915. He was 5ft 6½ins tall. He went to the Front on 19th June 1916 and was posted to No 74 Field Ambulance. He was killed by a piece of high-explosive shell while waiting to some wounded men. He died instantaneously.
