John was the third of William and Kate Gutteridge's fourteen children. After leaving school he spent many years at Howard's Stores (grocers) in the High Street. He was a member of Bromley Gymnasium Club where he was a very able competitor.

John enlisted in 1914 and soon rose from private to company sergeant-major. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

At Baussy, on 16th October 1918, for most conspicuous gallantry. During the attack the company came under very heavy enfilade machine gun fire, and suffered many causalities, all of the officers being either killed or wounded, and he several times reorganised the platoons after the platoon commanders had become causalities. Later he took a Lewis gun to an advanced position and personally directed the fire, completely breaking up an enemy counter attack. During the whole morning until badly wounded, he did excellent work and his fine example greatly inspired the men.
