Douglas was the only son, and third of John and Annie Grubb's four children. He was educated at Aylesbury Road School before becoming a Commercial Art student. His family attended the Congregation al Church.
Douglas had been offered, but declined, a commission and joined the Public Schools Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers in October 1915. He went to Front in March 1916 and was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
