Albert was the sixth of Joseph and Mary Follett's ten children. By 1887 the family had settled in Bromley. Albert's brother Frederick died in 1895, aged 20, when he lost control of his bicycle going down Westerham Hill, he had no brakes! After school Albert joined the family bakery business on London Road, the family business survived for over 40 years.

Albert enlisted in the Royal West Kents on 10th December 1915. He was 5ft 10½ins tall and had a scar on the right of his jaw. In July 1916 he was mobilized and posted to 3/5th Battalion. Albert did not see active service. He was taken ill and admitted to Devonport Military Hospital on 2nd January 1917, He died at 10.55pm the next day from cerebrospinal meningitis. CWGC gives 4th as his date of death.
