George was the eldest son and 2nd of William and Rose Ashbee's seven children. All the children, except Lilian, were baptised on 12th January 1906 at St Luke's Church. He attended Raglan Road School where he was a keen athlete and excelled in both running and football. After leaving school he took up a position as a telegraph messenger.
He joined the Royal Navy in 1912. He was serving on the HMS Formidable when it was torpedoed and sunk in the Channel in the early hours of 1st January 1915. His body was recovered by a trawler a few miles out from Dieppe on 25th. He was buried at Janval Cemetery with full military honours.
