Ralph was the second youngest of George and Alice Farley's nine children. He was baptised at St Luke's on 29th January 1899. Ralph attended Raglan Road School prior to becoming a chauffeur. By 1911 George had died, possibly in 1904 in West Bromwich, his birth place.
Ralph enlisted on 19th January 1915, he was 5ft 6žins tall. He was sent to France on 6th July 1915, and apart from 10 days leave in mid August 1917, was on active service until he was admitted to hospital on 27th July 1918 with gastroenteritis enteritis. Ralph made no improvement so was sent home to the 2nd London General Hospital on 6th August where he spent several weeks. Ralph requested to go home, he was discharged from the army on 13th December as unfit because of pulmonary tuberculosis but passed away the next day.
