William was the 5th of Alfred and Elizabeth Emblen's nine children. He attended Wharton Road School before becoming a groundsman at Quernmore School. In 1907 William married Agnes Mary Dalton, they had six children.
He enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment in May 1917, was sent to France in August and then attached to the London Regiment.
William's sister Daisy married Thomas Philpott who also died. His sister Annie's brother-in-law George Tolhurst was also killed.
