William was the sixth of John and Charlotte Elliott's ten children. He was baptised at St Peter & St Paul's Church on 4th January 1885. William was educated at Raglan Road School before becoming a labourer, then bricklayer like his father and brothers.
He joined the Flying Corps as a mechanic in August 1916 and went out to France. While there he was transferred to the 2nd Lincolnshire Regiment in October 1917 and shortly afterwards was home on leave. He had been gasses twice, in May and again in September 1917. His five surviving brothers also served.
