William was the 2nd of William and Clara Elizabeth Armitage's four children. By 1911 the family had moved from Leyton to Albert Road, Bromley.
On leaving Raglan Road School William joined the post office as a messenger, rising to be First Assistant Postman and then Postman. He was a member of the Stanley Tent of the Order of Rechabites.
At the outbreak of war he joined the Royal West Kents with other members of the Bromley Postal Staff and although he experienced many hardships his letters home were always cheerful with no complaints. He was sent home after being wounded on 1st July 1916 but, despite several operations including the amputation of his leg, he died on 27th November 1916 at the North Evington War Hospital Leicester.
