Leonard was the only child of George and Bertha Daws. George must have left Bertha shortly after George's birth as they are alone in 1901 and by 1911 Bertha says she is a widow. A death for George hasn't been found. Bertha's sister Eliza lived in Bromley with her husband Richard Payne and their four children so it is likely that Leonard was cared for by them while he attended Aylesbury Road school.
Leonard enlisted in the Royal Navy on 1st March 1911, when he was 15. He was 5ft 6ins tall, had dark brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. He died on 8th November 1914 when he suffered a fractured skull caused by the accidental fall of mine sinkers whist being unloaded in SS John Sanderson.
