William was the eldest of Inkerman and Sarah Davey's eight children. He was educated at Raglan Road School after which he became a fishmonger. By the time he enlisted he was a warehouseman.
William enlisted in the Royal West Kents on 15th February 1916. He was 5ft 8½ins tall and weighed 151lbs. He had 3 missing teeth and had psoriasis. William was sent to the Front with the 6th Battalion on 3rd October 1916. On 3rd May 1917 during the battle for Devil's Trench, part of the Arras Offensive, he received a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest. This resulted in him being sent to 3rd Western General Hospital, Cardiff for treatment. He remained there until 6th July, and after convalescing was posted to 2nd/4th Battalion arriving in Alexandria on 25th August.
William was one of 14 men reported missing following a battle north of Beersheba on 4th November.
