William was the eldest of John and Mary Ann Darrington's six children. In 1904 he married Harriet Sears, their son William was born in 1916. William initially worked as a window cleaner but as his name also appears on the West Kent District (Gas Board) memorial at the gas works in Homesdale Road it can be assumed that he worked there before he enlisted.
William died during the Defence of Amiens when his battalion was involved in re-taking Hangard village and Copse.
William's brother Brace also died, as a result of the war, in 1924.
