Bertie was the seventh of John and Clara Crothall's ten children. By 1885 the family had moved to Bromley where Bertie attended the National School before joining the Post Office as a telegraph messenger in 1895, progressing to postman. He married Louisa Sanders in 1912.
Bertie enlisted in July 1916 in the Royal West Kents but later transferred to the 4th Middlesex Regiment. Bertie lost his life at the Battle of Arras (Battle of Arleux).
