Cecil was the eldest of Vincent and Caroline Coster's two children. He was baptised on 27th November 1892 at St Matthew Brixton.

Cecil was formerly attached to the West Kent Yeomanry and serve with his regiment as a sergeant in Gallipoli during 1915 until the evacuation. He was subsequently transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and went to Egypt. In September 1916 he sat for, and obtained, his commission at Cairo and returned as an officer to his former regiment. On the formation of the Mounted Machine Gun Corps he was again transferred and saw considerable service in Egypt and Palestine. He was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in the field on 13th November 1917 during the advance in Palestine.
