Willie was the only son and second child of William and Ethel Coombs. He was baptised at St Luke's church on 21st May 1899. He attended Aylesbury Road School.
Willie enlisted in the London Scottish Regiment in May 1917, shortly after his 18th birthday. In February 1918 he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and sent to Fraance on 14th April. He was reported missing on 27th May 1918.
