Edward was the eldest of Harry and Agnes Cook's four children. Born late in 1898 he was baptised on 27th November that year. He attended Bickley & Widmore Schools.
Edward joined the army in May 1915 although he was well under age. By December he was in France where he stayed until August 1916 when, owing to him still being underage, his parents successfully claimed him. He had taken part in the battles which led to the capture of Hill 62. By June 1917 he was recalled to the army, going again to France in October 1917. Edward died when struck in the stomach by a piece of shell.
His father Harry served with the Royal West Kents from April 1908 to April 1917, posted to India October 1914 to December 1916.
