Roland was the only child of Charles Clarke and his first wife Helen Chapman. His father remarried in 1906 and had two more sons. In 1901 Roland is at Stevenage Grammar School.

Roland died when the ship he was travelling on, the SS Princess Alberta, struck a mine between the islands of Stavros and Mudros in the Aegean Sea. 33 people lost their lives.
