Harold was the fifth of William and Emily Chandler's nine children. By late 1894, when their son Sidney was born and sadly died, they were living in Bromley. Harold attended the National School. At the age of 18 he decided to make a new life in Canada, sailing on the ship "Canada" from Liverpool on 5th August 1909, for Montreal. In 1911 Harold was living in South Toronto with his sister Lily who had followed him to Canada in 1910.

Harold was living in Montreal when he enlisted in the Royal Montreal Regiment on 5th June 1916. He was 5ft 8½ins tall, had a fair complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. He was a Methodist. Harold arrived in France on 14th December 1916. He was gassed in September 1917, returning to his battalion on 27th October, then on leave in January 1918. He seems to have been in and out of hospital throughout his time in France suffering from an ingrowing toe nail and piles.

Harold's grave shows his date of death as 1st September 1918 yet the grave registration documents show 4th September. This would put him at the Battle of Drocourt-Quéant Line when he died.

Harold's sister Emily married Stephen Willatt who also lost his life.
