William was born in 1896, the second youngest of the nine surviving children of Thomas and Jane Chance. He attended St Mary's, Plaistow school and then worked for his brother Robert in the timber trade.
William joined the East Surreys in January 1916, going to France in early Summer where he was severely injured in August, spending four months in hospital. In December he re-joined his regiment and was with them until he came home on leave in February 1918. Shortly afterwards he was taken ill and did not return to the front until August 1918. From the dates of his letters home it would appear that he was killed on his first day back in the line.
