Frederick was the youngest of Albert and Mary Button's two children. He attended Raglan Road School. He served for a number of years in the Royal West Kent Territorials, having joined in 1906, but resigned before the war started. Prior to re-joining his regiment Frederick was employed by the Bromley Electric Light Company.
At the end of October 1914 Frederick found himself bound for India. Whilst there Frederick volunteered for the Indian Expeditionary Force to Mesopotamia where he transferred to the R E search light company. He took part in the victorious march to Bagdad but afterwards was taken ill and died in hospital.
