Michael was the second of Michael and Minnie Burkin's seven children. He was known as Teddy. He married Emma Elizabeth Whitehead on 1st November 1902, they had four children.
When he enlisted in the Royal West Kents on 25th October 1914 he stated that he had previously served in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Royal West Kents. He served with them until 29th April 1916 then he transferred to the Royal Defence Corps, from there Teddy went to the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry on 15th October 1917 and then to the Royal Welch Fusiliers on 16th June 1918, with whom he went to France despite being crippled with rheumatism. His final transfer was to the Middlesex Regiment on 15th July 1918. He died of acute bronchial pneumonia three months later.
