Ernest was the third of Frederick and Emma Browne's five children. He was baptised at St Peter & St Paul's Church on 3rd May 1885. He attended the National School then worked as a clerk for the District Council. By 1911 he was a billiard marker, when he enlisted he gives his occupation as a golf club attendant. Ernest married Annie Gallier on 23rd May 1904, the first of their seven children being born in June. An eighth child was born in 1919.

Ernest enlisted in the Royal West Kents on 31st August 1914, he was 5ft 7ins tall and weighed 144lbs. He was sent to the Front on 1st June 1915. On 14th November he received gunshot wounds to his legs resulting in him being sent home to the Duchess of Connaught Canadian Red Cross Hospital, Taplow, Bucks, where he stayed until 5th February 1916. Ernest returned to the Front on 15th April 1916. He died at the Battle of Transloy Ridge.
