Alfred was born in 1893, in Bromley, the 8th child of William and Marie Brown of 5 Wharton Road. He attended Wharton Road School before working in the fish department of Messrs. Howard's Stores, Bromley.
Alfred enlisted in the Norfolk Regiment in June 1916 but was afterwards attached to the Northumberland Fusiliers, going to the front in August that year. A month later, on 15th September , he was hit by a shell and died instantly.
Alfred had married Agnes May Wheatland in 1915. His brother Archibald Stanley also died.
