Ernest was the youngest of the 7 children of William and Emily Alexander. In 1913 he married Mary Gaskin and they had 2 children.
He enlisted in the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment in 1916 and served 3½ years in India which left him with a weak heart. He succumbed to an attack of pleurisy and pneumonia at the Bromley Cottage Hospital on 5th February 1921. His funeral took place at St Luke's Cemetery on 10th February.
