George was the eldest of George and Hannah Boxall's four children. He was baptised on 11th June 1899 at St Luke's Church. He attended Raglan Road school (appears as G W Boxall on their memorial). Leaving school he was employed by the South Suburban Gas Company as a fitter's mate.
He joined the East Yorkshire Regiment on 5th June 1917, just after his 18th birthday. He was 5ft 6¾ins tall and of good physical development. George was sent to the Front on 31st March 1918.
