John was born in 1881 four years after his mother Olive's husband William died. John had six older half siblings. John worked for a number of years for Messrs Daniel Grinsted, coal and coke merchant, and then as a dairyman for Mr George.He married Edith Louisa Hannington in 1909.
In November 1916 he joined the Buffs and went to India in February 1917. He was for a short period in Mesopotamia, where heart problems developed. He was at various stations in India before becoming seriously ill and died on 16th October 1918 from syphilis.
