George was the fourth of Albert and Clara Goodhew's nine children. George attended Chislehurst Road School, Orpington prior to taking employment with Frederick Tremain, furnishing ironmonger, in Orpington. After his marriage to Elsie Alice Banks in February 1915 George took a job driving the Bromley Co-operative Stores milk motor van.

George enlisted on 14th June 1917 in the Royal Garrison Artillery, transferring to the Army Service Corps on 5th July. He went to the Front on 16th August 1917. George died, with three other men, while delivering ammunition to his battery when bombs were dropped near the lorries. At the time he was attached to the 248th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery.
