George was the illegitimate son of Harriet Boaks, he had an older sister Edith (also illegitimate) and a younger sister Emma born after Harriet's marriage to William Bridgeland. He attended Wharton Road School prior to taking employment as a gardener.
George enlisted with the Royal West Kents on 9th September 1914. He was 5ft 3ins tall, had good vision and his physical development was good. He served at home until 17th August 1915 when he embarked for Bombay, arriving in Busra on the 26th and joined his battalion at the front on 7th September. George was presumed captured at the battle of Kut-al-Amara on 29th April 1916 and died a prisoner of war.
Harriet's sister Emily also lost her son, George's cousin, William George Barham Tye.
