William was baptised on 6th May 1896 at St John's Chelsea. His parents were Alfred and Emma Adamson. Alfred died in the first quarter of 1898, aged 28, just before his daughter Kathleen was born. In 1901 Emma and her two children were living with her unmarried sisters at 20 Southlands Road.
William was a pupil at Raglan Road School before becoming a grocer's apprentice. He joined the 1st Battalion of the Royal West Surrey Regiment in April 1913 and took part in a fierce battle in October 1914. He was reported missing at the time and death was confirmed a year later.
