Harold was the 2nd youngest of Major General Daniel George and Jane Amelia Robinson's nine children. His father had served in the army in India, where he married Jane, since 1845. He died at sea in 1877 when Harold was 7 years old. His mother died in 1915. All Harold's brothers had military careers.
Harold joined the North Lancashires in 1891 and served in West Africa in 1898, and throughout the South African War receiving the Queen's Medal with three clasps and the King's Medal with two clasps. He was promoted to Major in December 1909. He accompanied his regiment to East Africa in 1914 where he contracted heart disease. He died in South Africa.
Harold's brother Archibald and nephew Daniel also died.
