Albert was the 5th of Frank and Mary Neal's seven children. The family moved from Tonbridge to Bromley in the early 1890s. His mother died in 1900 and his father married Mary Sarah Salter in 1905. They moved to Sydenham c1915, sister Annie married Frank Jenner remaining in Bromley at 71 Pope Road.

After attending Raglan Road School he was employed at the Bickley Golf Links, but subsequently went to the Lord Holmesdale public house where he was employed when war broke out.

He enlisted in the Royal West Surreys in March 1915 and six weeks later was in the trenches. He came home on leave in January 1916 and married Eleanor Amy Smith. He was wounded twice and gassed but not badly enough to be sent home. On 5th November he was again wounded and died at the dressing station.

His brother Harry also died. His other brother Horace died of influenza and cardiac failure on 24th May 1909 aged 12. The Bromley & District Times records him by name as being on the War Memorial.
Eleanor's brothers Henry and Sidney also died.
