Clarence was the eldest of Walter Henry and Fanny Banner's two children. Born in 1890 in Boughton- on- the- Water, Gloucestershire, Clarence lived with his parents and younger brother in Orpington before moving to 65 Widmore Road. He trained as a wireless telegraph operator prior to joining the offices of the West Kent Main Sewage Board.
In October 1915 he joined the RAF, and within a fortnight was sent to France. Having passed an exacting examination he was sent back to England in Spring 1916 to become an instructor of wireless telegraphy in the RFC, he was based at Weybridge and then Winchester. In June 1918 Clarence married Winifred Bush. It was while at Winchester he contracted pneumonia after influenza, and died. His son Clarence was born in 1919.
Clarence's brother Walter also died.
