Extra details

Herbert was the eldest of Arthur Henry and Mary Amelia Hewett's five children. He was educated at Quernmore School, Bromley before attending the Merchant Taylors' School from 1909 to 1911. He played rugby for the 3rd XV and was a reasonable shot in the Officers' Training Corps. Shortly after leaving school he was offered a position at a recently formed Insurance Company where, despite his lack of years he attained the position of assistant manager.

When war broke out Herbert enlisted as a private in the Motor Transport. In 1915 he applied for a commission and was gazetted to the Royal Warwicks, being promoted to Captain in 1917. During the March 1918 offensive he was wounded and sent to Dover to take on light duties. Anxious to re-join his battalion he made a special application to be sent back to the Front, where he arrived in June. He was killed by a German sniper while leading his Company in action.

Thank you to Merchant Taylors' School for their assistance.
