Frederick was the second of William and Alice Harris's five children. After attending Aylesbury Road School Frederick took a job in a butcher's shop.
Frederick enlisted in the Royal Artillery on 2nd March 1903, transferring to the Royal Berkshire Regiment on 29th June. He was 5ft 6žins tall, weighed 109lbs,he had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
Frederick's battalion was at Aldershot when war was declared on 4th August 1914, they left for France on the 12th. He took part in the fighting withdrawal from Mons and the 1st Battle of Ypres. 1915 was spent in and out of the trenches culminating in the Battle of Loos in the autumn. The battalion's major action of 1916 was on 27th July at Delville Wood where 8 officers and 256 other ranks were lost. Frederick was one of the 256 and Herbert J Stidwill was one of the officers.
