Leslie was the eldest of Ernest and Clara Hammerton's two children. After being educated at Herne Bay College he intended to go to the South Eastern Agricultural College at Wye for a two year course.
However war was declared, so on 8th September he joined the Cameron Highlanders and went to Bedford for training before going to the Front on 19th February 1915. He saw many battles including Neuve Chapelle, Festubert and Las Bassee. On 28th September Leslie was on duty in the front line, holding one of the captured trenches, when a shell burst in the trench killing him and several others.
