Eric was the eldest of William George Devon and Ellen Emily Astle's four children. He was baptised at St Luke's Church on 23rd April 1891. In 1911 Eric was a pupil at Miss Mary Winder's school in Brighton. He also attended Quernmore School, and then King's College where he studied engineering. Afterwards he was at Paisley for two years. By 1914 both his parents had died and the family had moved to Copperfield, Blenheim Road, they also had an uncle, Arthur Astle, living in Rodway Road.
Eric enlisted in the London Regiment at the beginning of the war and was at the Front until April 1916 when he got home leave. News was received that he had been wounded on 7th October 1916, afterwards reported missing believed killed. But a further report was received which stated that on the way to the dressing station Eric was wounded again and died instantly.
