John was the only child of Emily Gilbert. Born in Hockliffe, Bedfordshire John and his mother moved first to St Mary Cray and then to Bromley where, by 1908 John had his own business as a wholesale fruiterer and greengrocer. On 11th July 1908, at St Luke's church, John married Mabel Ella Pearce.
John was initially exempt from service because of his business and family commitments but eventually enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment on 28th February 1917, records show that he was 5ft 8½ins tall. He went to the Front on 13th May that year then in August he was transferred to Police HQ. John was killed instantly by a shell from a French mortar.
