William was the eldest of John and Mary Gifford's six children. By 1911 the family had settled in Bromley, John was still at 7 Albert Road in 1939.
William served with the 123rd Company of the Machine Gun Corps and was one of three men of the Company killed during fighting in the St Eloi sector at Yoormezeele on 28th May 1917.
