Herbert was the third of Thomas and Matilda's eight children. He attended Wharton Road School. In 1911 he is working from home as are his parents and two younger brothers, presumably in his father's wood dealer business.
When Herbert enlisted in the Royal West Kents he used his middle name of James and is recorded on the Loos Memorial as such. He was sent to the Front on 19th June 1915. On 8th October 1915, despite severe bombardment by the Germans, the 6th Battalion attempted to re-take the trenches captured by the Germans but were unsuccessful. This attack resulted in 12 men killed, 39 missing and 53 wounded, Herbert was one of the missing.
