Robert was the eldest of George and Anne East's four children. George had another four children from his first marriage to Sarah Ann Norris. Robert was baptised on 27th April 1896. George died in 1907 when Robert was 11. He attended Raglan Road School.
In 1913 Robert enlisted in the Grenadier Guards. He saw much fighting and was wounded at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, Loos in March 1915 and on another occasion, both times recovering to return to the Front. He was badly wounded at the Battle of the Somme in August 1916, dying at Birmingham Military Hospital in November. He received a full military funeral at St Luke's Church.
His half- brother Alec also died.
