Ernest was the eighth of William and Rosetta's eleven children. He was educated at the Church elementary school before taking up a position of valet at High Elms.
Ernest enlisted in the 20th Bn Royal Fusiliers, later 8th Bn, in 1915 and was sent to France on 12th November that year. He was sent home in 1917 to recover from wounds, returning to the Front after 3 months. He died of wounds on 7th September.
Ernest's sister Mabel served in the Women's Royal Air Force, she died in 3rd November 1918 of influenza. She is buried in Bromley Hill Cemetery with a CWGC headstone but doesn't appear on the War Memorial.
