Alec was the only son of William Durrant and his first wife Elizabeth Alice. He was baptised at All Saints in Rotherhithe on 15th February 1893. Elizabeth died when Alec was about 18 months old, his father remarried in 1905 to Harriett Rachel Dixon.
Alec joined the Territorial Force in May 1910, when he was 18, so he was fully trained when war broke out. He obtained his commission in July 1915 and was promoted to Lieutenant eight months later. Alec was crossing no-mans-land, trying to organise a number of Infantrymen who were without officers, when he was shot in his left side and died two minutes later.
