Walter was the fourth of George and Ellen Dunmall's ten children, he was baptised on 8th April 1883 with his younger sister Emily. By 1901 Walter had left Farningham to live in Bromley with his cousin Harry Dunmall. He married Martha Jane Lee on 29th February 1902, they had two sons but unfortunately the youngest died when he was just four.
Walter enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment on 6th December 1915. He was 5ft 6ins tall and weighed 130lbs.After training he was sent to Etaples on 28th September 1916 where, on 9th November he received a gunshot wound to his right leg, returning to England on 17th. He was sent back to the Front on 19th May 1917. He was reported missing on 12th April 1918.
