Hamilton was the youngest of Alexander and Louisa Drysdale's four children. He was educated at Quernmore, Bromley and at Cheltenham College (May 1901-December 1915).
From Cheltenham Hamilton went directly to Sandhurst, joining the Indian Army in 1907, being attached for one year to the 2nd Queen's and afterwards posted to the 26th Punjabis. When war broke out he was home on leave, but in order to get to the Front he was successful in getting attached to the 11th Royal Scots, and at the time of his death was in command of a company of that regiment.
His brother Alexander was also killed and his other brother Kenneth died of fever whilst serving in the Navy in 1899.
