James was the fourth of James and Alice Dixon's nine children. He was educated at Raglan Road School before becoming a gardener.
James served in the Territorials for several years, retiring just 6 months before war broke out. He re-enlisted in October 1914 in the Royal West Kents but was transferred to the London Regiment. Wounded at the Battle of the Somme he was sent home, but recovered well and was sent out again in February 1917. On 23th May the battalion was just being sent out of the trenches for rest when they were re-called, it was then that James was killed.
