Walter was the third of Richard and Edith Day's four children. Richard was a lecturer in mathematics at King's College, London then subsequently at the Birkbeck Institute. In 1910 he inherited Blyford Hall agricultural estate in Suffolk.
There is a memorial plaque to Walter in All Saints Church, Blyford which reads
TO THE MEMORY OFCAPTAIN WALTER EVAN DAY
ROYAL ENGINEERS
SECOND SON OF EVAN AND EDITH DAY
OF BLYFORD HALL
IN 1914 - 1915 HE SERVED AGAINST THE TURKS ON THE
SUEZ CANAL AND AT ANZAC; AT ALDERSHOT IN THE FOLLOWING
WINTER HE TRAINED THE NEW 233RD FIELD COMPANY
AND AS OC HE TOOK IT OUT TO FRANCE AT EASTER 1916
HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION NEAR ARMENTIERES ON
JUNE 6TH 1916, AGED 31, AND WAS BURIED IN THE
TANCREZ FARM SOLDIERS' CEMETERY
The wooden cross, below, was brought back from Flanders after the war and is near the pulpit in the church.
