George was the illegitimate son of Harriet Croft. She married James William Pryke in 1898 and Frederick Young in 1912. Harriet had ten children in all but five were to die within a year of birth.
George enlisted on 22nd June 1914 stating that he had previously been with 3rd Royal West Kents in 1913 and had purchased his discharge. He was 5ft 2ins tall, weighed 108lbs, had brown eyes, dark brown hair and was slightly bow legged. He embarked for France on 4th October 1914 and died 17 days later at the First Battle of Ypres.
