Henry was the second of William and Alice Butcher's three sons. He attended the Bromley National School before going to St Dunstan's in September 1902. He left there in April 1905 to pursue a career in banking with the London County and Westminster Bank, firstly at Fore Street City branch and then at Chatham branch. His inclination, however, was always towards missionary work so he relinquished his career in banking to go to St Augustine's Canterbury to study to become a missionary.
Henry is remembered on his parent's grave in London Road Cemetery.
When war was declared Henry volunteered for the Royal Army Medical Corps. Henry died when a shell burst in his dressing station during the Battle of Loos.
