Samuel appears to be the only child of Samuel and Maryann Bush. He married Hannah Cotter Robinson on 7th November 1875 at Emmanuel Church, Camberwell. They had two children. By 1891 the family were living at Bromley Common. Hannah died in 1901 and Samuel married Alice Burr at St Luke's Church on 8th November 1902.
At the outbreak of war Samuel had been a member of the St John's Ambulance Brigade for 18 years so it seemed natural to volunteer for the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was stationed at Connaught Hospital, Aldershot. Ill health meant Samuel had to return home in January 1915 and he died from heart disease and bronchitis on 11th March. He received a full military funeral.
His name is recorded in the Roll of Honour of the St John's Ambulance Brigard which can be seen here
